You walk deeper into the Candy Cane Forest. The snow is soft and quiet under your boots, and the peppermint trees glow faintly in the fading light. As you tiptoe around a tall striped trunk, you hear a tiny voice.
"Psst! Down here!"
You look down and see a small squirrel with a fluffy white tail and bright berry-red cheeks. He holds an acorn almost as big as his head.
"I was checking my acorn storage earlier," the squirrel squeaks, "and I saw a paper flutter past! It blew toward that old log over there."
He points with his tail to a fallen log a couple hundred feet away.
"Thank you!" you say.
You hurry to the log. Next to it is a large hollow stump, its inside lit by a little glow of winter magic. You peek in…there it is! A long piece of curled paper, with gold writing. You pull it out carefully—and your heart sinks a little. It's torn.
"This is only half of Santa's Nice List," you whisper.
You hold it close so it won't blow away again. You look back toward the forest, wondering where the rest could be.
