Determined to follow the boot prints you saw outside, you realize the window is the fastest way out. You carefully open the window wider, squirming through the gap, and drop down—SPLOOSH!
You land plop into the muddy flower bed right outside the window. Your shoes, socks, and pants are instantly covered in thick, cold mud. At least your class was on the main level! Ignoring the mess, you follow the hard, round boot prints into the hall and past the water fountain. They lead right up to the double doors of the gym.
You slip inside. The gym is mostly dark and quiet. A janitor, Mr. Davis, is mopping the floor in the far corner. He has big, round boots, and they look exactly like the prints you followed.
"Excuse me, Mr. Davis," you say, trying not to track too much mud onto the polished floor. "Did you see anyone carrying a big silver platter of cupcakes?"
Mr. Davis looks surprised. "Cupcakes? No. But I did see someone running very fast with a big, messy box heading towards the back of the school. It looked like they were going to the Art Room. However, I also saw a couple students who looked like they were sneaking around go into the hall next to the lunchroom."
