You narrow your eyes. "You there," you say, pointing your magnifying glass at your little brother, "you have suspiciously chocolatey cheeks."
"I do not!" he says quickly, wiping his mouth with his sleeve. Unfortunately for him, that just smears a big chocolate streak across his face.
You fold your arms. "Tell the truth. Did you eat Santa's cookies?"
He hesitates, glancing at Mom and Dad, then sighs. "Maybe… just one."
"One?" you ask. "Or all of them?"
He shakes his head quickly. "No way! I promise! I didn't eat them all!"
Just then, Dad chuckles from the couch. "Well, I might've had one."
Mom smiles sheepishly from the wrapping-paper pile. "They did smell really good," she admits.
You look from Mom to Dad to your brother — and then to Rex the dog, who lets out a guilty little "woof" and droops his ears.
Your jaw drops. "Wait a second… everyone ate them?!"
The whole family bursts out laughing.
Your brother reaches behind his back and pulls out a mixing spoon. "I already felt bad," he says. "I was gonna make more!"
You can't help but smile. "All right, everyone," you declare, "to the kitchen!"
