The Emerald Crown

You follow the riverbank just as the fisherman described. The sand is cool beneath your feet, smoothed by water and wind. At first, you see nothing unusual. Then you slow down—and look closer. There. A line of small footprints, wider than a human child's, pressed unevenly into the damp sand. The toes are short and spread, built for balance, not speed. Beside them runs a shallow groove. Drag marks. Something heavy was pulled along the ground. You crouch and trace the marks with your eyes. They head toward the cliffs where the land rises sharply from the river. The sand thins there, broken by stone. But the closer you get, the harder the trail is to follow. The wind has been busy overnight. The footprints have been covered by sand from the night wind. You stand and look around. You can not see where the footprints might have been going. It feels like a dead end. But you know you have some important clues: 1-The figures were not human 2- They were carrying something heavy 3- They moved toward the cliffs, not away from them. You brush the sand from your hands and turn back toward town. You need to look into who these small beings could be.
