The Emerald Crown

You carefully look over the edge of the chasm. It seems to be endless, you can not see the bottom. A narrow stone bridge stretches across it, disappearing into shadow. Several stones in the center are cracked, barely holding together. Glowing symbols float above the gap, drifting slowly like thoughts that refuse to settle. As you step closer, a calm voice echoes through the cavern. "What do you assume?" You stop. You assumed the bridge was meant to be crossed. You assumed the symbols were decoration. You assumed the fastest way forward was straight ahead. The voice speaks again, quieter now. "What if the question is not how to cross… but which way?" You look around. To your left, the broken bridge seems to invite you onward—dangerous, but direct. To your right, the cavern wall is uneven. At first glance it looks impassable, but faint footholds are carved into the stone, nearly hidden in shadow. The symbols above the chasm swirl, waiting.
