You walk over to Kevin's desk, ignoring the stale smell of old lunch and broken crayons. You lean close and nudge him gently. "Hey, Kevin, what's with the dark red smear on the side of your desk?"
Kevin tenses up, pushing his glasses higher up his nose. "Huh? Oh, that," he mumbles, looking anywhere but at you. "I was drawing a heart for a Valentine card. My red marker must have smeared."
He sounds nervous, and too quick. You examine the spot closer. You rub your finger over the smear. It's not marker—it's sticky, and tiny silver and red specks of glitter stick to your fingertip. It's definitely edible glitter from the sugar hearts on the stolen cupcakes!
You crouch down. Beneath his chair, almost hidden by a book, you spot a crumpled-up piece of bright red foil. It's sticky and smells faintly of vanilla. Kevin definitely touched the cupcakes, but why is there only one tiny piece of foil? Hmm... the cupcakes had paper cups, not foil.
If the thief hurried back inside and realized they were carrying evidence—like a bigger wrapper or the platter itself—where would they hide it?
The trash can is the first place Ms. Lily would look, making it too obvious. But the coat rack area in the hall is a dark, crowded space, full of hiding places and distractions. A hurried thief might have stuffed the evidence deep inside their coat pocket or under a pile of scarves before calmly walking back to their seat. The trail might be in the hall!
