You head toward the lunchroom hallway, which is oddly dark and quiet. You hear tiny, muffled giggling sounds coming from the supply closet near the kitchens.
You cautiously push the door open just a crack and peek inside.
There, sitting on upturned buckets and surrounded by cases of juice boxes, are two small first-graders. They are completely covered in pink frosting and edible glitter, and they are surrounded by the remnants of the Valentine Cupcakes! The silver platter is on the floor, empty except for a few wrappers.
"Busted!" you whisper.
The two first-graders freeze, wide-eyed, a mouthful of vanilla cake still showing. The cupcakes are definitely gone.
You escort the tiny, frosting-covered culprits straight to Principal Sterling's office. The Principal listens to the story, shaking his head.
"Thank you," he says. "The mystery is solved, but sadly, the cupcakes are lost. I will be contacting their parents immediately."
He stands up and hands you a small, brightly colored bag of generic Valentine's candy. "Please take this back to your class. It's not the same as the cupcakes, but it will do for a party snack."
You return to the classroom. The party is back on, but instead of the perfect Valentine Cupcakes, your class shares the slightly waxy, heart-shaped candy. It's a nice snack, but definitely not as good as the pink frosting swirls.
The End.
