You follow the fairy's advice and head toward the Crystal Hills. The ground rises in gentle slopes, and tall crystals jut out of the earth like frozen rainbows. Each crystal glows softly, lighting the way forward. When you step closer, the nearest one hums and points its light ahead, as if saying This way.
You walk on, hopping from glow to glow. The crystals pulse brighter when you move calmly--and for a moment, the path stays smooth and clear. But then the crystals blink and you hear bickering.
A squirrel and a rabbit stand nose to nose near a crystal cluster.
"You took my acorn pile!" the squirrel squeaks.
"I did not!" the rabbit thumps back. "You left it there!"
As their voices rise, the crystals around them flicker. One spins the wrong way. Another dims completely. The glowing trail splits, then zigzags, then curls in a tight loop.
"Uh-oh," you whisper.
You step closer. "Hey--maybe you could slow down and explain..."
But the arguing grows louder. The ground shivers. The crystals whirl like confused compass needles, and suddenly the hills slide sideways. The sky rewinds a second.
Before you can stop yourself, the path twists--and carries you right back to where you started.
