The Case of the Missing Cookies

You turn toward the mantel, where the nutcracker sits frozen in his usual spot — arms straight, grin wide. You step closer, lower your voice, and whisper, "I know you saw something." For a second, nothing happens. The lights on the tree blink softly. Then — ting! — the tiny bell on the nutcracker's hat jingles. You gasp. "Was that… a yes?" The nutcracker's head tilts ever so slightly toward the chimney. You glance at the fireplace. "The chimney? You mean… the thief went up the chimney?" The nutcracker nods (you think). You shine your flashlight up inside, and a little bit of ash falls down onto your nose. You sneeze. You step back, eyes wide. "No way," you whisper. "Was it… a reindeer?" No response from the nutcracker. It seems to be a dead end. Your mom looks at you concerned. "You ok?" she asks. You laugh at yourself and consider your other options.
