The Wizard's Curse

You take a deep breath and step between the fairy and a nearby unicorn whose mane flickers like it's being brushed backward by the wind. "Maybe you could just explain what you mean," you suggest. "And then listen to each other." The fairy nods eagerly. "We just want time to finish our thoughts before decisions are made." The unicorn opens his mouth to reply--but his words tumble out too fast. "We do listen! You just talk forever and nothing ever happens!" Before either of them can stop, the ground beneath your feet shivers. The path beside you bends sharply, curling like a ribbon pulled the wrong way. The sky hiccups, rewinding a second, then jumping forward again. "See?" the fairy snaps. "You didn't even let me--" "And you're doing it again!" the unicorn interrupts. Both freeze, surprised by their own voices. The fairy presses her hands to her temples. "That wasn't what I meant to say." The unicorn lowers his head. "Me neither." Around you, flowers whisper louder, and the humming grass buzzes nervously, as if the land itself is tired of arguing. "It's the spell," the fairy says quietly. "Even when we try to be kind, it twists our words." The unicorn looks at you with worried eyes. "Until the wizard fixes this... we can't seem to fix anything else."
